Two unidentified armed robbers who were shot dead on April 23, 2020 at Tema community 1 TDC junction by a policeman who engaged the robbers in a shootout are believed to had an inside tip-off in Zenith Bank.
The incident occurred after the robbers immobilize the car tyres of the victim, a Lebanese man who had been to the Zenith bank to withdraw some money. Police say they are investigating the “strong possibility” of an insider in the bank who tipped off the robbers.
The shooting incident yesterday attracted a large crowd of people from Tema Community 1, Sites one and four to the traffic light, while others followed to the Tema Community One Police Station to catch a glimpse of the dead robber.
Narrating circumstances under which the robbery occurred on Ahotor FM monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Paul Kissi Frimpong said luck eluded the two robbers after the Police patrol team pursued them until they were killed in a fire exchange, Thursday.
“A robbery took place in Tema here. A businessman had gone to Zenith Bank to withdraw over GHS100,000. As they left the bank, these two robbers on a motorbike who chased him, immobilized his vehicle by shooting at the tyres then succeeded in taking his money away.”
“An alarm was raised and the information got to the Police. Our patrol team pursued them and eventually had the two of them killed by an exchange of fire. The money also scattered on the street. People had to scramble for the money so eventually, we had only GHS 2, 500 out of the 100,000 cedis,” he said.
He added that the robbers who are in their 20’s where having a locally manufactured heavy pistol.
