SELF IMPROVEMENT IN LEADERSHIP BY FRANCIS ABBAH

“Before leaders can improve their people, they will need to get better and improve themselves.”- Francis Abbah

Before leaders can improve their people, they will need to get better and improve themselves. And as John Maxwell rightly stated, “we cannot give what we do not have”, it means the basis for improving the lives of others starts with the improvement of our lives, either as leaders or as individuals.

To become better at leading, we will need to improve ourselves. Likewise, to improve the lives of our people, we as leaders or as individuals need to improve our lives as well.

Some leaders who are growth oriented will like to improve upon their lives in order to improve the lives of their people. However, most leaders are unaware of how to improve their lives. They get stuck when it comes to the process of improving their lives.

So, the question is, how do we improve our lives as leaders and as individuals? We improve our lives by first being aware and acknowledging our weaknesses and shortcomings, taking steps to better them, and lastly, working to improve upon our strengths.

To improve upon our lives, we need to become aware of and acknowledge our weaknesses and shortcomings. For we cannot improve upon what we are not aware of. Likewise, we cannot improve upon what we do not acknowledge as shortcomings in our lives. For us to improve, we need to know what about our lives needs improvement, and we do that by first being aware of and acknowledging our weaknesses and shortcomings.

Secondly, we improve our lives by bettering our weaknesses and shortcomings. For what is the point of knowing our weaknesses and shortcomings without taking steps to better them. There is a niche that states that the strength of a team is impacted strongly by its weakest link. What it means is that, no matter how strong an entity is, there will be a lot of negative impact on that entity based on how lengthy its weakest link (whether people, systems etc) is. Hence, there will always be the need to improve upon our weaknesses and shortcomings if we want to improve and to become better leaders and individuals.

Lastly, to improve upon our lives, we need to improve upon our strengths. To improve our strengths simply means making decisions, choices and taking actions that help us to grow our strengths zone which may include the daily practicing of our skills, talent and giftedness and studying. So, for example, if you are gifted in communication, to improve upon that strength, it will be required of you to practice communicating at every opportunity that you get. It may also require that you get study materials on the subject of communication to improve upon your giftedness.

We will never fully maximize our potential if we do not improve either as leaders or as individuals. And we will not be able to effectively improve the lives of our people if we ourselves have not improved. For he who wants to change the world must first change himself.
